The Department of Canadian Heritage wants to know what Canadians think. The Government of Canada is seeking input from all Canadians, whether in Canada or abroad, who have an interest in, or want to share their opinion on, museums in Canada…

The purpose of these consultations is to gather views on issues of importance to Canadians, Indigenous partners and the heritage sector. Responses will help build a federal vision for the museum sector, which will be used to adapt or improve existing federal measures to ensure that our cultural heritage is protected, and that heritage institutions continue to be a place where Canadians can learn for generations to come.

Snow is rapidly melting but the CMMM grounds remain – mostly – a squishy, muddy mess. As soon as we have access, the first order of business will be the Annual Walk-thru by the Board. This is when we take stock of what needs to be done prior to Museum Opening. In the meantime, though, the Robins are having a great time picking their way through the puddles…

‘It’s the Small Things’

Clayton McLain Memorial Museum

This is a dream come true for Lucille and for many other longtime volunteers with the CMMM. The museum display cases located in the CK Library will provide a year-round public space in which we can showcase items from the many collections that spend most of their time in storage. All exhibits will be switched out as time permits. Stop in regularly to see what’s up next.

‘It’s the Small Things‘ consists of 11 artifacts taken out of storage and includes the following:

  • Handcrafted Box gifted at Christmas 1905 in Traverse City, Michigan (Donor: James Wettlaufer).
  • Nine items including a 1939 Royal Visit Commemorative Pin and Silver Spoon, a Pocket Watch, Tie Clip, and Hair Pin (Donor: Hazel Robertson).
  • Feather Hair Piece worn in the 1920s (Donor: Woodward Family).

New Trustees

The March 26 AGM was pretty exciting. We elected 3 new Trustees!!

The 2023 / 2024 Board is as follows:

The move from Railway Avenue to the MAAC-2 on Broad Street is in progress. The Board table had been relocated and was back in one-piece for the first meeting. Notice the new display case* in the second photo? It is just waiting to be filled with an exhibit!

Proposed Bylaw Amendments (2023)

UPDATE (June 20, 2023): For community members interested in the CMMM’s governance, we’ll be voting on these 3 amendments on Monday, June 26. The Board meeting will be at 7:30pm at the MAAC (Museum Archives and Administration Centre) at 113 Broad Street.

Amendment #1

Whereas there is no longer a local newspaper,
Therefore be it resolved that:
ARTICLE IV: ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
B) Notice of Annual Membership Meeting shall be advertised in the local paper at least 15 days before it is held.
Be amended to read
B) Notice of Annual Membership Meeting shall be advertised at least 15 days before it is held.

Amendment #2

Whereas it is becoming more difficult to have people interested in attending our AGM or to be a trustee, and
Whereas a minimum of 6 members to attend and vote at the AGM meeting is attainable now and into the foreseeable future,
Therefore be it resolved that:
ARTICLE IV: ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
C) A quorum for the Annual Membership Meeting shall be a minimum of 8 persons.
Be amended to read
C) A quorum for the Annual Membership Meeting shall be a minimum of 6 persons.

Amendment #3

Whereas at times, when regular or special Board meetings are held, it is necessary to wait for a period of time until quorum requirements are met,
Therefore be it resolved that:
ARTICLE VI: MEETINGS OF THE BOARD
Section 3: A quorum for any meeting of the Board of Trustees shall be a minimum of 5 (five) members of the voting Board members.
Be amended to read
Section 3: A quorum for any meeting of the Board of Trustees shall be a minimum of 4 (four) members of the voting Board members.

These bylaws may be amended by a 2/3rds majority vote at any duly called (regular or special) meeting. Notice of the proposed action must be communicated to all members in writing at least 30 days prior to such meeting. Any action to amend the bylaws must be noticed in the meeting agenda.

These amendments will be eligible for a vote on, or after Tuesday, April 25, 2023.
