A Little Reminder

I had an appointment and shopped in North Battleford yesterday for supplies for upcoming Centennial.

We try to shop in Cut Knife as much as possible but some things just aren’t available here.

One of the items needed was a new Saskatchewan flag. No flag was found in NB. And I asked in quite a few places. Canadian Tire has Canada and Quebec flags in their system. I know because I have their smart phone app and checked on it. There are Roughrider flags galore. One sales person told me that it WAS the Sask flag. 😦

Today I went into T&T Hardware in Cut Knife and there was the Sask flag I searched for 30 miles away.

Makes one think that Sask promotion and patriotism might be a little too focused on sporting events?

International Museum Day

TOMORROW, MAY 18 IS INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY.

Our museum is gearing up for the season with lots of behind-the-scene things going on. Staff hiring and training and grounds and building cleanups take a lot of time to organize and carry out.

A big bouquet of thanks to all the people around the world who care about their heritage and  who work to preserve it for the future.

Yay Museums and Archives!!

Been Thinking Again…

For quite some time I have been thinking that for small town museums to thrive and maybe even survive, they need to evolve into true community centres. Visitor statistics at museums reveal that 85% of visitors go to museums because of events and they return because of events. So what does that tell me?

If we want more people at the museum, we need to plan more events. Focus time and money on events that people want to attend.

Now to put thinking into action. The hard part.

A Winter 0f Museums

The author spent a month on Vancouver Island where some of the best destinations of course were museums. The Royal BC Museum in Victoria, Comox Air Museum, Nanaimo Museum, Nanaimo Military Museum, Port Alberni Museum, Qualicum Beach Museum, Campbell River Museum, and Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria. And yes, there were some we missed! Next time.

As well we visited Milner Gardens at Qualicum Beach. This was a special treat. Don’t miss it if you are in the area. My favorite things – a bit of history, a garden, and a beautiful view.

So, I came home with some new ideas for displays as I usually do.

I really love museums. Haven’t been to one I that I didn’t learn something.

But then I am a little biased.
