The Town of Cut Knife is celebrating Canada Day 2024 with a full slate of activities taking place around town and in Tomahawk Park. The day begins with the Parade and will finish off with Fireworks.
The Poundmaker Indigenous Performance Festival was established in 2018 by organizer Floyd Favel. Originally a celebration of the talent and diversity of local Indigenous performers, it has expanded to include Indigenous cultures and diverse theatre practices from around the world. 2024’s program hasn’t yet been released, but last year’s festival included a Greek tragedy, cultural lectures, Plains Indian sign language workshops, and performances of poetry and spoken word.
“I went to school in Denmark and Italy working in the realm of theatre as a writer and as a director, but I moved back to my community in the 1990s”… He has also written a few books and produced two films on the Delmas Residential School.
On June 19, Favel will be awarded the 2024 Saskatchewan Award of Merit for “his commitment to helping to revive the arts, culture and language in his Poundmaker Cree Nation community.” Read more from Battlefords Now.
Floyd Favel asked the CMMM to share this year’s Festival poster, and we are happy to do so. We encourage everyone to check out the program once it’s available and make plans to attend a performance or lecture. If last year is any indication, there’ll be something for everyone!
Mary Ramsay’s Landscape and Sky exhibit, sponsored by Veikle Agro Inc., will finish its run at the Spare Room Gallery on Sunday, June 23. Feedback from visitors has been glowing. We want everyone to have a chance to see how well, and how beautifully, Mary has captured moments from a lifetime of living and raising her children on the family farm.
In addition to Wednesdays from 1:30 โ 6:30pm & Fridays from 11:00am โ 4pm, the Gallery will also be open on these weekends:
Saturday, June 15 from 2 – 4pm;
Sunday, June 16 from 10:30am – 12:30pm:

The CMMM’s Annual General Meeting was held on Sunday, April 21 at the MAAC. The 2024 / 2025 Board is as follows:
Randy Strelioff, Chair
Debbie MacLeod, Vice-Chair
MJ Kammerer, Treasurer
Colton Stapley, Secretary
John Rutley, Permanent Trustee
Mel Sawatzky, Permanent Trustee
Lisa Drake, Town of Cut Knife Representative
R.M. of Cut Knife Representative, currently vacant
Outgoing Chair Colton Stapley has spent the majority of his 7 years as Board Trustee on the Executive as Chair. We want to acknowledge his commitment to the Museum’s preservation and growth, and his technical expertise in so many areas. He has accumulated a wealth of museum-related knowledge and experience, and we are fortunate he is willing to stay on and share it with us.
Thank you for your years of service, Colton. We hope there are many more.
We had a great group of volunteers show up at 10am. We worked through the wildfire smoke and the 30+ km winds taking at least 8 loads of tree trimmings to the Transfer Station. The Duvall House, the Station, and the Exhibit buildings were dusted and swept. Some leaves were gathered. The leaf catcher on the mower will take care of the rest. We finished up with hot dogs and squares from Cut Knife AG Foods – which were delicious!
Many thanks to the community members, former and current Board members, and staff members who took time out of their Saturday to help with spring clean-up. I wish I could name everyone who was there today but I didn’t write down names, and I also forgot to take pictures. What I can do, though, is show you a few photos of Tomahawk Park all spiffed-up for Canada Day.
The Friends of Tomahawk Park bricks swept clean of leaves and other debris, with its sign in the background.
About 8 loads of trimmed branches from the walking path trees went to the Transfer Station.
Again, from all of us at the Museum, thanks so much for your support.
