ย Unfiltered: Breaking the Frame

โ€œAs we navigate our digital landscape, the demand for perfection or conformity can overshadow genuine expression. I aim for my work to create a space that encourages authenticity and introspection.โ€œ

Nature thrives in the most unexpected places. The reference was taken at a construction site.โ€ ~ Litofalotus, Caged 2025 (watercolour, acyrla gouache, coloured pencil on masonite board wihth crocheted frame.

โ€œMany of the works in this exhibit have a new mixed media approach with crochet. Crochet is a medium I picked up as a teenager and it has always been there for me throughout my evolution as an artistโ€ฆ I am intrigued and also saddened by the modernization of society conflicting with the beauty and natural elements of this world. Even through the cold brutalism of modernization, nature still thrives in places we might not think, like a construction site or rain water runoff.โ€“ Lightofalotus a.k.a. Lotus Vivirviel, Artist.

WHIMSY & WONDER: Expressions from the Heart of Home”

โ€œThe creative expressions within this collection capture the whimsy and wonder that our children experience in daily life โ€“ a snapshot of childhood emotions, explorations, and insights.โ€

โ€œI love the sunset and the moon and the field going against the moon. At first I didnโ€™t know how I would make it to the end of this piece, but I felt excited as I was doing it and I surprised myself with how good it looked at the end.โ€ ~ Felicity, age 8 – A Field Against the Moon, chalk, pastel, sharpie

Whimsy & Wonder is a collection of pieces from within the home environments of 11 unique families who all have one thing in common: they have chosen to home-educate their children. No two home education environments look the same, but aspects of the hearts of each home are encapsulated within each piece.

As you observe this collection, we hope you are moved to feel an expanded appreciation for seeing the world from a child-artistโ€™s perspective, and to recognize the gift we all receive when we nurture childhood creative expression. โ€“ Charissa Slater, Exhibition Organizer

Through the Ages”

The Gallery welcomesย Cut Knife Community Schoolโ€™sย THROUGH THE AGESย from April 30 through May 30, 2025.ย โ€œArt is a lifelong process of growth, and this collection invites you to experience that progressionโ€”how creativity develops, deepens, and evolves from early childhood through the teenage years.โ€ย

mosaic
This collaborative mosaic is made up of 128 individually crafted wooden tiles, created by the Grade 8 and 9 students at Cut Knife Community School during the second half of the 2023โ€“2024 school year. Inspired by a traditional star blanket design, each tile represents a personal expression of identity, culture, and history, woven together to form a powerful collective story.

Each artwork represents a step in a journey through the ages, reflecting the growth, exploration, and individuality that comes with learning and creating art at different stages of life.

Here, you will see the artistic voices of our youngest students beginning to emerge, alongside the more refined and complex expressions of our older students.ย โ€“ CKCS Students and Staff.

Lurid Dreams”

Born and raised in Cut Knife, Mรฉtis artist Aleksi Annโ€™s LURID DREAMS uses a vivid colour palette, Saskatchewan-inspired imagery, and a dreamlike perspective to explore intense emotions and feelings of isolation.

Dreams can play tricks on our minds, giving us sensations and images that feel falsely familiar and real. By rooting the imagery aspect of this exhibition in things that remind me of home, I was able to abstract and distort my everyday into dreams. In many ways, the act of painting can feel like being the author of dreams โ€“ โ€“ reality is whatever you make it. โ€“ Aleksi Ann, Artist.
